On Wednesday, Joshua, Paul and I paddled the Ghost River section of the Wolf River in Tennessee. It’s about an hour from Olive Branch.
We put in just south of LaGrange and the take-out is at the Bateman Bridge.
The river was very narrow in spots . . . even more so than in the photos, to the point that you couldn’t get the paddle out next to you.
We stopped for a break upon entering the Cypress swamp.
The water trail was a little difficult to follow in the Cypress Swamp, even with the little reflective signs in the trees which tell you which way to go. Without them we’d be lost in a hurry.
I flipped my kayak after running into a tree and lost my eyeglasses about midway through the 10 mile trip. We kept an eye out for water snakes and the dreaded water moccasin. We didn’t see any, but did see some large birds which we think were Turkey Vultures.
We emerged from the swamp and the river opened up some.
The rest of the short trip went smoothly as the river cleared. We reached the takeout at Bateman Bridge safely. This section of river would be better suited to short boats than a 17 foot sea kayak and a 16.5 foot tandem, but that’s all we had at that time. It worked!
